The Tree and the Forest

A student asked the master, "What is a tree?"

The master replied, "When you see a tree, do you see its leaves or the forest?"

The student was puzzled and said, "I see both, master."

The master smiled and said, "When you understand that the leaves, the tree, and the forest are not separate, you will have found the essence."
